Last night, tens of thousands of people in Slovakia protested against Prime Minister Fico’s pro-Russian policies. Demonstrations took place in nearly thirty cities, with approximately 60,000 protesters gathered in front of the government building in Bratislava, according to organizers.
Last month, Fico visited Russian President Putin and opposed military support for Ukraine. Recently, he hinted at Slovakia potentially leaving the EU and NATO.
His policies are increasingly opposed domestically, leading to growing protests. Fico claims the opposition is attempting to seize power with foreign assistance, a claim the opposition denies.
Last week, an opposition party called for a criminal investigation into the government, alleging Fico is misusing the intelligence service to spy on and pressure political opponents and activists.
