The man who held four people hostage in a café in Ede in March has been sentenced to nine months in prison and compulsory psychiatric treatment. Due to his time already spent in custody, he will be transferred directly to a psychiatric clinic.
The court has deemed him to be of diminished responsibility. He was acquitted of hostage-taking but found guilty of unlawful restraint and threats.
“He did something terrible, but with no ulterior motive, which is why it’s classified as unlawful restraint rather than hostage-taking,” explained the judge. The Public Prosecution Service had made a similar case two weeks prior.
