Man sentenced to 20 years for murder of girlfriend’s father

A 37-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the murder of his girlfriend’s father. The prosecution stated that the man conspired with his then-girlfriend through over a thousand Snapchat messages to plan the murder.

The 58-year-old victim was killed on March 24, 2023, in Wouwse Plantage, West Brabant. He suffered severe blunt force trauma and multiple stab wounds, leading to significant blood loss.

Witnesses saw Jeroen L., the victim’s son-in-law, drive away from the crime scene. He was arrested the next morning while discarding a trash bag containing clothes stained with the victim’s blood.

L. has consistently denied involvement, claiming his ex-girlfriend killed her father and that he found the victim dead. He explained the blood on his clothes by saying he pulled a knife from his father-in-law’s chest.

The court found this explanation “utterly implausible,” as reported by Omroep Brabant. The man and his girlfriend exchanged Snapchat messages plotting the murder, with the girlfriend expressing her desire to be rid of her father.

L. agreed to help and purchased a knife online under a false name a month later. The daughter reportedly had conflicts with her father over the 15-year age gap between her and Jeroen L. The court ruled that the messages indicated their intent to remove the father.

The 22-year-old daughter is in custody on suspicion of plotting the murder and will be tried in May.
