Man sentenced to 14 years for fatal stabbing at festival

The court has sentenced Derzik H. to 14 years in prison for fatally stabbing Jimmy Schepers at the Solid Grooves festival. Two co-defendants received sentences of 18 and 6 months.

The incident occurred in late May 2023 in Amsterdam’s Westelijk Havengebied. The 21-year-old Schepers and his friends got into an altercation with H. and others, which escalated into a fight.

Schepers died from stab wounds, and two of his friends were seriously injured. Three suspects, including H., who is considered the main perpetrator, were arrested shortly after the stabbing.

The court found H. guilty based on evidence, including video footage showing him making a stabbing motion. H. was also convicted of violent robbery and public violence.

The prosecution had demanded 20 years, but the court imposed a 14-year sentence, considering similar cases and H.’s young age. The maximum penalty for manslaughter at the time was 15 years.

Co-defendants Arginio E. and Guillermo G. received lower sentences than the prosecution’s demand for public violence, threats, and theft with violence, due to the severity of the violence involved.
