Edgar Maddison Welch, the American who opened fire in a pizzeria in 2016 due to conspiracy theories, was fatally shot by police in North Carolina last weekend. Welch, 36, refused to drop a firearm when confronted by officers.
In 2016, shortly after Donald Trump’s election, Welch traveled to Washington, D.C., believing false news that Hillary Clinton was running a satanic pedophile ring from the Comet Ping Pong pizzeria. Armed, he entered the restaurant, causing panic among families dining there, but no one was injured.
Welch was sentenced to four years in prison and was released in 2020. The police shot Welch on Saturday during an arrest attempt near Salisbury.
He was wanted for violating his release conditions. Officers fired when Welch pulled a gun and aimed it at them.
Welch died from his injuries two days later. Other passengers and the officers were unharmed, and the officers have been placed on administrative leave pending investigation.
