The man arrested last night in IJsselmonde for the shootings in this Rotterdam district had been previously checked by police during their investigation. At that time, there was insufficient reason to detain him as he did not fully match the description, according to Fred Westerbeke, the chief commissioner of the Rotterdam police unit, at a press conference this morning.
The man had been stopped earlier following a tip, during which his identity was checked and a photo taken. “This contributed to his later arrest,” stated Westerbeke.
Over the past two weeks, three men were shot dead in IJsselmonde. The victims were aged 63, 58, and 81.
The suspect, a 24-year-old man with no fixed residence, was apprehended late last night at a house on Emelissedijk. He has prior convictions for minor property crimes.
After the third shooting, which occurred yesterday, police released a new photo of the suspect for better identification and offered a 30,000-euro reward for information leading to his arrest. The police also advised IJsselmonde residents to exercise extra caution and avoid going out alone.
