The primary suspect in the deadly explosion at Tarwekamp in The Hague expressed remorse during the initial court hearing. The explosion on December 7 resulted in six fatalities.
Moshtag B., 33, stated, “I deeply regret what happened. It was unintended and got completely out of hand.” Four men are on trial, including Moshtag B., two suspected perpetrators, and a man initially involved but later withdrew.
Prosecutors highlighted the immense suffering caused, referencing an 8-year-old survivor’s testimony. The explosion’s target was a bridal shop owned by Moshtag B.’s ex-girlfriend, with alleged infidelity as the motive.
The initial plan was to steal dresses and vandalize the shop, later escalating to arson using gasoline. Prosecutors state that B. and another suspect poured 200 liters of gasoline, igniting it with fireworks, causing the explosion.
Three men face charges of arson and murder or manslaughter. Defense attorneys contest the murder accusation.
The prosecution also discussed a prior arrest of two suspects found with gasoline and fireworks but later released. Adil A., another suspect, denies involvement, attributing his situation to Moshtag B. The trial has drawn significant public interest and is expected to continue for another six months, with further inquiry into the building’s structural integrity.
