Maduro inaugurated for third term despite global criticism

Nicolás Maduro has been inaugurated for his third term as President of Venezuela, despite many countries not recognizing his election victory due to alleged fraud. Maduro, in his oath, promised this term would be “a period of peace, prosperity, and equality.” Maduro, 62, has led Venezuela since 2013.

The country is experiencing severe economic and humanitarian crises, prompting millions to emigrate over the past twelve years. The opposition claims fraud occurred in the last election in July of the previous year.

Although opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia was defeated, the electoral commission declared Maduro the winner. The international community, including the US, EU, and neighboring countries Brazil and Colombia, largely rejected the election results.

Yesterday, the opposition stated that Maduro’s inauguration is tantamount to a coup. Maduro remains with few allies, including Iran, China, and Russia, and is increasingly isolated globally.

Presidents of Cuba and Nicaragua were the only international leaders attending his inauguration.
