There has been outrage in Senegal and Chad over “disparaging” and “inaccurate” remarks made by Emmanuel Macron. In a speech on Monday, the French president discussed military ties with African countries, which have dissolved in recent years.
Macron mentioned that African leaders owe everything to their former colonizer, stating, “None of them would be leading a sovereign country if the French military had not been deployed in the region.” This has led to deep concern from the Chadian government, which criticized Macron’s “disparaging attitude towards Africa and Africans.” Senegal’s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko also highlighted the role of African soldiers in defending France during World War II and criticized France’s involvement in Libya in 2011. Disagreements persist over the decision to close French military bases.
Senegal and Chad insist it was their independent decision, contrary to Macron’s claim of joint agreement. Beverly Ochieng, a security analyst, sees this speech as a “new low for France,” exacerbating anti-French sentiments.
Macron intends to revitalize French strategy in Africa, focusing on non-colonial ties, such as Nigeria and Kenya. However, Ochieng warns that Macron’s leadership may further damage France’s credibility on the continent.
