M23 Rebels Seize Goma Amid Escalating Violence in Congo

The population of Goma, a city in eastern Congo, is again suffering from violence. The rebel group M23 claims to have taken control of the city overnight, which has often been struck by calamity.

According to UN figures, 400,000 people have fled this month alone in two provinces around Goma, adding to the millions already displaced. Goma, a city with an estimated two million residents near the Rwandan border, was briefly captured by M23 in 2012.

Continued violence has led to overcrowded refugee camps around the city. Almost four years ago, Goma experienced a volcanic eruption, resulting in damage to houses and infrastructure in the outskirts.
