The Los Angeles Fire Department is making steady progress in controlling the wildfires surrounding the metropolitan area. However, increased winds have raised concerns about potential flare-ups or new fires.
In recent days, firefighters have also extinguished several smaller intentionally set fires. Since last week, approximately six individuals have been arrested on suspicion of arson.
One suspect reportedly stated he set a tree on fire because he “loves the smell of burning leaves,” according to Police Chief Jim McDonnell. Another suspect claimed to “enjoy chaos and destruction.” The origins of the three largest fires remain unknown.
The Eaton fire, burning north of the city, is now 45% contained, up from 35% the previous day. Efforts to control the Palisades fire have been slower, with containment at 19%, compared to 17% the day before.
The death toll from the fires remains at 25, with dozens more missing. Thousands of homes have been destroyed.
While winds are expected to strengthen initially, forecasts suggest they may die down later in the week, offering hope to residents and firefighters.
