Local Authorities Oppose New Wind Farm Locations in Utrecht

The municipalities of Stichtse Vecht and Oudewater express dismay over two new wind farm areas designated by the Province of Utrecht. They feel obstructed by the provincial decision.

Alderman Dick Polman of Stichtse Vecht stated, “We will not cooperate with this provincial initiative.” The provincial government plans to install wind turbines near Loenen aan de Vecht, Oudewater, and Montfoort to meet national climate targets for 2030. Previously, the province identified 27 potential sites for wind energy, allowing municipalities six months to respond or propose alternatives.

In September, the province determined additional turbines were still necessary. The chosen sites had not submitted concrete sustainable energy plans.

The municipalities prefer solar energy over wind energy, as confirmed by Alderman Polman. The planned turbines might affect breeding birds and cause disturbances, according to RTV Utrecht.

Alderman Bas Lont of Oudewater expressed disappointment and concern. The province acknowledges the sensitivity of the decision and intends to engage with local communities.

Residents can discuss the number and exact location of turbines at informational meetings in February.
