Lelystad Airport favored for F-35 expansion

Lelystad Airport is currently the preferred site for expanding fighter jet capacity, according to the Dutch Ministry of Defense. Research indicates that F-35 training at Lelystad would cause the least noise disturbance to residents.

State Secretary Tuinman announced the findings, noting that other locations considered include former airbase De Peel and Groningen Eelde Airport. In response, Drenthe officials expressed disappointment, emphasizing the impact on local trust.

Currently, Volkel and Leeuwarden house the Netherlands’ F-35s. The Defense Ministry also seeks a site for a dirtstrip for tactical transport aircraft landings, narrowing the options to four locations.

The government aims to announce preliminary preferred sites by early 2025.
