The Lebanese parliament has elected Army Commander Joseph Aoun as the new president, succeeding Michel Aoun, who was in office until the end of October 2022. The two are not related.
In the second round of voting, Aoun secured a significant majority. Lebanon had been without a president for over two years, as previous attempts to elect a head of state were unsuccessful.
Aoun received 99 out of 128 votes after Suleiman Frangieh, leader of a small Christian party, withdrew his candidacy. Frangieh was supported by Hezbollah’s political wing.
