Kids Rights calls for action plan to tackle housing crisis

Kids Rights, a children’s rights organization, emphasizes the urgency of creating an action plan to assist young people in securing affordable housing. Their research, conducted with Kids Youth NL, indicates that young people are delaying life plans, such as having children, due to housing shortages and exorbitant prices.

Marc Dullaert, Kids Rights’ chairman and former children’s ombudsman, urges swift political action. Although a plan exists for the elderly, students and young professionals face significant challenges, with 90% struggling to find housing.

Over half of those without a home report feeling restricted in their freedom and social development. The few who do secure housing suffer stress from high rent or mortgage costs.

Dullaert calls for government investment in making accommodations accessible, including subsidies and clear goals. While successful senior housing initiatives might create opportunities for young people, additional measures are necessary.

The study reveals two-thirds of respondents reluctantly live with their parents, and 20% feel lonely or isolated without a home. Young people propose solutions like converting schools and offices, easing mortgage rules for those with student debt, and prioritizing locals in housing allocations.
