Jean-Marie Le Pen’s tumultuous political career ends

Jean-Marie Le Pen, founder of the far-right party Front National, was a controversial figure in French politics for decades. He gained significant attention in April 2002 when he advanced to the second round of the presidential election, facing Jacques Chirac instead of the expected socialist candidate, Lionel Jospin.

This was largely due to a fragmented left-wing vote. Despite his proximity to power, Le Pen lost decisively, with over 82% of voters supporting Chirac in the runoff.
