Japan is encouraging Australian tourists to explore less frequented destinations in the country. Last year, over 800,000 Australians visited Japan within the first 11 months, surpassing the 2019 record by 200,000.
Australians also tend to stay the longest among all tourists. The influx mainly targets cities like Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto, which are struggling with tourist crowds post-pandemic.
The Japanese tourism organization suggests alternatives such as Tohoku and Kanazawa, offering temples, shops, and cherry blossoms, and also promotes rural villages. The organization stresses the importance of responsible travel due to its significant impact on local communities in popular destinations.
The favorable exchange rate is one factor driving the popularity of Japan as a travel destination for Australians.
