Jan Erents, known as ‘Jantje van Amsterdam’ from the documentary series Foute Vrienden, has died from cancer, according to director Roy Dames. His exact age is unknown.
Jantje was one of four Amsterdam friends, often referred to by their nicknames: Rooie Jos, Verbrande Herman, and Dikke Bobbie. The series portrayed their lives involving crime and alcohol, as well as their friendships and struggles for happiness.
Dames met them in an Amsterdam pub during the 1980s and continued to document their lives. Erents had been dealing with health issues, and it was recently revealed he was terminally ill.
A crowdfunding effort has successfully raised over 9,000 euros, allowing his family to say goodbye peacefully.
