An Italian nun, Sister Anna Donelli, who was awarded earlier this year for her work with prisoners, has been arrested in a mafia crackdown. In Brescia, east of Milan, 25 individuals were detained for alleged connections with the ‘ndrangheta, a powerful mafia group from southern Italy.
Authorities also seized 1.8 million euros. Sister Donelli had received the ‘Golden Panettone’ award for her societal contributions in the Milan area, recognized for supporting prisoners by listening to them and organizing football matches.
However, police suspect she acted as an intermediary between the ‘ndrangheta and mafia members in prison. Among those arrested were two local politicians accused of vote buying, illegal weapon possession, money laundering, loan sharking, drug trafficking, and issuing fake invoices.
