Italian journalist Cecilia Sala has been detained in Tehran. According to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, she was arrested while working on a report in the Iranian capital.
Sala has since been in contact with her family and the Italian embassy. She was detained by police last Thursday and remains in custody.
The arrest was only recently disclosed as Sala and her family initially hoped that keeping it quiet would aid in her release, but this strategy has been ineffective. La Repubblica reports she was detained while preparing to return to Italy.
Italian Foreign Minister Tajani is closely monitoring the case, attempting to clarify the legal situation and circumstances. Sala had been in Tehran for about ten days with a journalist visa.
