Syrian security services have thwarted an IS bombing in Damascus, as reported by state media. The target was identified as a Shia shrine in a suburb.
An unspecified number of IS fighters were arrested. An anonymous source from the domestic security agency informed state news agency Sana that the IS members gathered shortly before their arrest to plan the attack.
Released photos show weapons and explosives intended for use in the attack. The Sayyida Zeinab shrine, frequented by Shia pilgrims, was the intended target according to the authorities.
The shrine has previously been targeted by terror attacks, including a 2023 incident where an explosive-laden motorcycle killed six people and injured dozens. Following the fall of the Assad regime in December, IS has been attempting to expand its influence in Syria.
There are concerns about the group’s potential regrouping, but experts believe it is unlikely that IS will regain significant influence in the country.
