Iraqi-Swedish Quran burner killed in Sweden

The Iraqi-Swedish individual, Salwan Momika, known for burning Qurans, was killed yesterday. The Stockholm court announced his death this morning as a trial against him was set to resume.

Momika was fatally shot at approximately 11:00 PM in a residence in Södertälje, near Stockholm, while live streaming on TikTok, according to Swedish media. Police found him with gunshot wounds, and he later succumbed to his injuries.

Five people have been arrested and are suspected of murder; their motive remains unknown. Momika, who became infamous for burning the Quran, sparked global outrage, particularly in Islamic countries where protests erupted, straining Sweden’s relations with these nations.

The 38-year-old fled to Sweden in 2018 and was granted a temporary residence permit, which was renewed last year. He was a member of the Assyrian, an ethnic Christian minority in Iraq, and described himself on Facebook as an “atheist thinker and writer.” Momika and a co-defendant were charged with incitement and hate speech.
