Italy has released an Iranian national, Mohammad Abedini, who was detained at the request of the United States for alleged involvement in a drone attack in Jordan. This decision follows the release of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala from a Tehran prison earlier this week.
An Iranian state news agency reported that Abedini, 38, is expected to return to Tehran shortly following discussions between Iranian and Italian officials. The United States had asked Italy to arrest Abedini, accusing him of supplying advanced drone components to Iran, which were later used in a drone attack on a Jordanian military base near the Syrian border, killing three U.S. soldiers.
Abedini had been held in a Milan prison, and Iran described his arrest as an “illegal act” that could damage diplomatic relations with Rome.
