Insurance executive shot; suspect held an incriminating manifesto

Luigi Mangione, 26, was arrested for the shooting of insurance executive Brian Thompson. He was found with a weapon and a manifesto expressing his negative views towards American corporations.

A police official told The New York Times that Mangione’s document apologized for any distress caused but stated that it was necessary, describing corporate executives as “parasites.” The attack, carried out on Wednesday, is believed to have been targeted, with the shooter awaiting and firing at Thompson from a short distance. Bullet casings found at the scene bore the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose,” often used in criticism of the insurance industry.

UnitedHealthcare has faced scrutiny over claim rejections, and Thompson had received threats online. Mangione, from a well-known brokerage family and a top student, reportedly had back pain and disputes with his insurer.

His actions have sparked widespread frustration among Americans about health insurers, with many sharing negative experiences online. Thompson was killed outside a New York hotel, and Mangione left behind evidence such as a backpack and phone.

He was captured after being recognized in a Pennsylvania fast-food restaurant. Mangione faces multiple charges, including murder, and is expected to be transferred to New York soon.
