Indonesian students sue Avans+ over alleged exploitation

A lawsuit is being filed in Breda by fifteen Indonesian nursing students against Avans+ college, alleging deception, negligence, abuse of power, and economic exploitation. These students came to the Netherlands through a work-study program by Avans+ and Your Medical Matchmaker (Yomema) starting in 2021, receiving a scholarship of 950 euros monthly.

They were promised a relocation allowance of 7750 euros, which they never received due to Dutch tax regulations. Students were required to work, intern, and attend classes six days a week.

Indonesian student Annisa Fitri reported unpaid internship work and exceeded working hours allowed by her visa. The Dutch Labor Inspectorate’s visit prompted some students to speak out, despite warnings from Yomema.

Over 200 students have been brought to the Netherlands through this program. Avans+ promised program improvements after media reports and has since decided to discontinue the program, citing current conditions.

They expressed regret over students’ dissatisfaction and acknowledged initial project misunderstandings. Fitri left the program due to lack of support, eventually finding a job in elderly care with a valid work visa.

Together with fourteen other students, she is suing for the promised relocation allowance. The court’s decision is expected in early 2025.
