Indonesia has officially joined the BRICS group of emerging economies, as announced by Brazil, the current chair of the group. The Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its welcome, noting Indonesia’s significant population and economy in Southeast Asia and its commitment to enhancing cooperation among southern countries.
Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country, had previously expressed its desire to join BRICS and received the group’s support in August 2023. However, Jakarta decided to join only after a new government took office last year.
The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that BRICS membership is a strategic move to strengthen partnerships with other developing countries. Established in 2009 as a counterbalance to the G7, the BRICS group originally included Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa.
Last year, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates became members. Additionally, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have formally applied for membership, while Saudi Arabia and Argentina have been invited but have not accepted.
