A 42-year-old man from Indiana was fatally shot by police just days after receiving a pardon for his involvement in the Capitol riot. During a traffic stop, the man was found to be carrying a weapon.
Following an altercation, an officer discharged their firearm. Matthew Huttle had been recently released after serving a sentence for his part in the January 6, 2021, Capitol breach, where Trump supporters attempted to prevent the certification of Democrat Biden’s election victory.
Huttle, who traveled to Washington with his uncle to attend the protest, claimed he was not a devoted Trump supporter but wanted to witness a historical moment. Previously, he had little to occupy him after serving a prison term for a traffic violation.
He received a six-month sentence for illegally entering the Capitol, while his uncle, who assaulted an officer during the riot, was sentenced to five years. On inauguration day, Trump pardoned approximately 1,500 individuals convicted or charged for the riot, including Huttle and his uncle.
The new president commuted the sentences of a few heavily punished protest leaders to time served. The exact reasons for Huttle’s traffic stop and the subsequent fatal shooting are unclear.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
