Increase in Traffic Injuries Despite Recent Decline

In 2023, 7,400 people were seriously injured in traffic incidents in the Netherlands, 900 fewer than in 2022. However, 2022 was a particularly bad year for traffic casualties, and a long-term increase is evident, reports the Institute for Road Safety Research (SWOV).

The number of casualties was lower in 2020 and 2021, likely due to reduced traffic during the COVID-19 pandemic. Compared to pre-pandemic years, the number of traffic deaths and injuries shows a long-term upward trend.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that traffic deaths also declined from 745 in 2022 to 684 in the previous year. Notably, the number of cycling casualties among older age groups is rising.

Cyclists accounted for 39% of traffic deaths and 70% of serious injuries in 2023. Over half (55%) of the traffic deaths in 2023 involved individuals over 60 years old, as did 58% of those injured.

The number of older traffic fatalities increases annually by about 3%, and by 5% among older cyclists. According to SWOV, aging population, unsafe infrastructure, and behavior issues like driving under influence and phone use contribute to this rise.

Traffic deaths on roads with speed limits of 30, 50, and 60 km/h are increasing, while those on 80 km/h roads have decreased. Traffic organizations urge the government to invest in safer infrastructure and enhance law enforcement to promote safe driving.
