In Hungary, police have raided the offices of the country’s anti-corruption watchdog. Yesterday, law enforcement searched the office building and home of its head, Ferenc Biró.
The Prosecutor’s Office has announced that he is suspected of corruption and abuse of power. Biró denies these accusations, as reported by Hungarian media, though he admitted his wife occasionally used the service car.
He believes the raid is politically motivated and linked to ongoing investigations by the watchdog. Thousands of documents were seized during the raid, including those related to investigations, according to Biró.
One such investigation concerns the Ministry of Communication and Secret Services. Ten days ago, the United States placed the minister on a sanctions list due to corruption.
Biró states he will continue his work. Reports from Hungarian media claim he used funds from the organization to renovate his house and install a hundred-meter-long fence.
Biró justifies this as necessary for his safety due to threats he received upon taking office.
