In Arles, a city in southeastern France, a prisoner held four medical staff members and a guard hostage for several hours. French media reported that the hostages included three nurses and a psychiatrist.
The hostage-taker, a 37-year-old man imprisoned for rape, reportedly wanted to be transferred to another facility. Interior Minister Darmanin announced on X that the situation was resolved without any injuries.
He thanked the prison staff and police for their efforts. The prison in Arles houses many inmates serving long sentences and those considered security risks, according to Le Monde.
In March 2022, Corsican nationalist Yvan Colonna was attacked in this prison. Colonna was convicted for the 1998 murder of the Corsican governor and died from his injuries.
