The Environmental Incident Service (MOD) of the RIVM reported that dioxin levels near the Lagun landfill in Bonaire have significantly exceeded safety standards. The findings come after a large fire at the site in early November, which led to the evacuation of several nearby residents.
Concerns have been raised about the health impacts of the persistent fires at the growing landfill. Elevated dioxin concentrations were detected up to four kilometers from the site, with levels significantly above the norm within two kilometers.
The 5th November fire is likely the source, although previous fires may also be responsible. Residents are advised not to consume local produce or livestock.
The Lagun landfill is Bonaire’s only official dump, and the ILT reported in October that environmental risks are escalating weekly. The Dutch government is considering intervening by temporarily taking over waste management duties from the island’s government.
