Starting December 19, heavy trucks will be prohibited from using the A12 viaducts near the Velperbroek junction in Arnhem. Rijkswaterstaat states that the viaducts are unsafe due to the steel reinforcement in the concrete aging faster than anticipated.
Approximately 65,000 vehicles cross these viaducts daily. Trucks over 45 tons must reroute, affecting about a thousand vehicles per workday.
This weight restriction will be indicated with signs along the A12. Although there is no immediate risk of collapse, the measure is being implemented quickly.
A support structure will be installed under the viaducts within a few months to prevent damage from heavy vehicles. Future renovation plans are uncertain, as the focus is on the construction for now.
