A link has been established between pneumonia and proximity to goat farms, with those living within 2 kilometers having a higher risk, according to the RIVM. The government is divided on additional measures and has sought advice from the Health Council.
Researchers estimate 1,200 to 6,600 additional cases of pneumonia annually among the 1.5 million people living near goat farms, potentially leading to 100 to 600 hospitalizations and 20 to 100 extra deaths each year. Insiders report a heated discussion between Health Minister Agema, who supports measures, and Agriculture Minister Wiersma, who opposes them to protect farmers.
The cabinet hopes the House of Representatives will urge Wiersma to act. A debate is scheduled for Thursday regarding zoonoses and animal diseases.
The government seeks the Health Council’s assessment on other potential causes and scientific validation of the link before deciding on further action. Previous studies have confirmed this connection, with the RIVM in 2021 identifying a 26-60% increased risk of pneumonia in rural areas with intensive farming, notably goat farms.
Past GGD advice recommended caution in expanding goat farms near sensitive locations. Some provinces have already halted new goat farms or expansions.
Despite this, the government has opted for inaction for now.
