Germany, Austria, and Sweden have temporarily suspended all asylum procedures for Syrians due to the fall of President Assad’s regime. In Germany, over 47,000 Syrian asylum applications are currently pending, according to the German press agency DPA, and decisions on these are being delayed.
This allows other asylum decisions to be prioritized, said a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior. In Austria, Chancellor Nehammer has instructed the Ministry of the Interior to suspend all Syrian applications and review cases where asylum has already been granted.
The ministry is also preparing for the “repatriation and deportation” of Syrian asylum seekers. The interim chancellor wrote on X that the security situation in Syria needs to be “reassessed.” In France, discussions are ongoing about suspending asylum procedures, with a decision expected within hours, according to the Ministry of the Interior.
The Dutch Ministry of Asylum and Migration has not yet stated if similar measures will be considered. PVV leader Wilders has urged Prime Minister Schoof to send Syrians back to Syria and called for a halt to Syrian asylum.
