German politician Christian Lindner attacked with foam

Christian Lindner, leader of the FDP, was attacked with shaving foam during a campaign event in northeastern Germany. A member of Die Linke approached him during his speech, addressed him with “Dear Mr. Lindner,” and threw a paper plate filled with foam at his face.

Security subdued the woman. The state chair of Die Linke confirmed her party membership.

Several young Die Linke members had protested against the FDP prior to the event, which was part of the former ‘traffic light coalition’ with Chancellor Scholz. Lindner responded lightly, wiping the foam away and joking about it.

His team shared the incident on social media, while an FDP spokesperson condemned it as an “unacceptable physical attack.” Chancellor Scholz expressed disapproval, emphasizing such actions are undemocratic. Attacks on politicians occur regularly in Germany, with 2,790 incidents reported in 2023.

Of these, 299 targeted FDP politicians.
