Gang violence in Haiti claims 184 lives, says UN

According to the UN, an armed gang in Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, has killed at least 184 people, as reported by multiple media outlets. UN Human Rights Commissioner Volker Türk stated in Geneva that these recent killings bring the death toll in Haiti this year to an alarming 5,000 people.

He emphasized the need to stop the flow of weapons to Haiti, Sudan, and Myanmar. The local human rights organization RNDDH attributes the violence to a gang leader’s revenge, believing his son was cursed, as reported by Reuters.

The massacre occurred on Friday and Saturday in Wharf Jeremy, part of Cité Soleil, with gang members reportedly using machetes and knives to kill over 100 people, mostly women and men over 60 years old. Haiti has been plagued by gang violence and poverty, with previous incidents involving gangs taking control of the international airport, storming the largest prison, and setting fire to police stations and hospitals in Port-au-Prince.

Since the assassination of President Moïse in 2021, there have been no elections. Prime Minister Conille was tasked earlier this year with organizing national elections but was dismissed less than six months later, without an explanation.
