Gang violence erupts at Haiti hospital reopening

In Haiti, at least two people were killed during the reopening of the country’s main hospital. Gang members opened fire during a press conference intended to showcase the restored building.

Violent gangs have taken control of most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, due to a power vacuum, including the port and airport. Earlier this year, they seized the largest public hospital, located near the government center.

The building suffered significant damage, including looting and bullet holes from clashes between gangs and police. Last summer, the Haitian government regained control of the facility, initiating restoration efforts.

Journalists were invited yesterday to report on the reopening by the Minister of Health, but gunfire erupted before the minister’s arrival. At least two journalists were killed, and an unknown number of others, including more journalists and some officers, were injured.

The city’s main gang leader later admitted to carrying out the attack due to lack of consultation regarding the reopening. Interim President Voltaire condemned the targeting of the hospital and promised that the perpetrators would face justice.
