In a high-profile French rape case, Dominique Pelicot has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. He admitted to drugging and raping his then-wife, Gisèle Pelicot, and inviting other men to do the same.
Over 51 men were tried in the court in Avignon, with sentences ranging from four to twenty years. Gisèle, unknowingly drugged and raped from 2011 to 2020, decided to have the trial public and advocated for the shame to be on the perpetrators.
The case came to light in September 2020 when Dominique was caught filming under women’s skirts in a supermarket, leading to a police raid that uncovered 20,000 photos and videos of abuse. Dominique confessed fully; however, many other suspects did not, with some claiming they believed Gisèle had consented or suggested they were also drugged.
