Freelancers face challenges as new regulations approach

During a recent meeting in Haarlem, approximately forty refugees and migrants from countries such as Somalia, Syria, and Afghanistan gathered to learn about upcoming changes to the freelance worker laws in the Netherlands. Many attendees, who work in sectors like transport and logistics, are either current or aspiring entrepreneurs.

The new enforcement of the self-employment law aims to prevent forced freelance work, a situation that some attendees find themselves in. Mahad Ahmed, chairman of the Somali Foundation in Haarlem, highlighted that many freelancers lack awareness about necessary financial obligations like taxes and insurance.

The session revealed widespread confusion over the difference between being an entrepreneur and a freelancer. Omar Osman, a taxi driver, shared his experience of accumulating a significant tax debt due to this lack of knowledge.

The government’s increased enforcement intends to protect such ‘forced’ freelancers from exploitation. Concerns over the implications of these changes persist, especially among those who fear official institutions.

Despite these challenges, attendees like Osman found the information session beneficial.
