Former VVD Politician Pieter Hofstra Passes Away at 78

Former Dutch MP and senator Pieter Hofstra (VVD) passed away last week at the age of 78, his family announced. Hofstra, an engineer born in Groningen, served in the House of Representatives from 1994 to 2006, focusing on traffic, public transport, and construction.

Known for advocating more highways and higher speed limits, he also supported road usage charges and effective public transport. He later served in the Senate from 2007 to 2011, where he continued to champion motorists’ interests, according to a statement on the Senate’s website.

His family described him as “a bon vivant and jovial epicurean” in their announcement.
