Former US Senator Bob Menendez Sentenced to 11 Years

Former US Senator Bob Menendez has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for corruption and acting as a foreign agent. He was convicted of accepting bribes from businesspeople, including cash, gold bars, and a car, in exchange for political influence.

Menendez, aged 71, was found guilty in July and resigned as senator a month later. Prosecutors had requested a 15-year prison sentence.

A long-time influential Democrat, Menendez served over 18 years in the Senate representing New Jersey. He is the first US senator ever convicted as a foreign agent.

In court, he denied the charges and delivered an emotional statement. His wife, Nadine Menendez, also faces corruption charges, but her trial has been postponed due to her breast cancer treatment.
