Former Surinamese President Desi Bouterse has died due to complications from liver failure associated with severe liver fibrosis, attributed to chronic alcohol use. This information comes from the Surinamese Public Prosecution Service, citing the autopsy report of the pathologist.
The body will be released to the family, though the police investigation is still ongoing. Bouterse passed away on December 23 or 24.
Last year, he was convicted for his leading role in the December Murders, during which fifteen opponents of his regime were killed in 1982. His death has stirred reactions in both Suriname and the Netherlands.
It was announced on Wednesday that the former president died at the age of 79. Earlier today, it was revealed that he will not receive a state funeral, as stated by the Surinamese Minister of Foreign Affairs during a press conference.
Further details will follow.
