A former doctor at Rijnstate Hospital in Arnhem may have used his own sperm for artificial insemination in the 1980s. The hospital is conducting an investigation.
They learned of the potential issue yesterday but did not disclose how the information was received. The number of offspring involved and the exact period of his activity as a donor are unclear.
The matter has been reported to the Health and Youth Care Inspectorate (IGJ). The news aligns with past irregularities, as the hospital’s sperm bank administration was found lacking in 2015.
The hospital took corrective measures then. The doctor has not responded to inquiries about his alleged donations.
Starting next week, KRO-NCRV will air a documentary on past sperm bank issues at Rijnstate, according to Omroep Gelderland. Similar cases have occurred elsewhere, including at clinics run by Jan Karbaat and in hospitals in Zwolle and Den Bosch.
