Former British Soldier Jailed for Spying for Iran

A former British soldier in London has been sentenced to fourteen years and three months in prison for espionage on behalf of Iran from 2019 to 2022. Daniel Abed Khalife, aged 23, collected names of special units within the British army.

Khalife, whose mother was born in Iran, joined the military at 16 in 2018. Shortly after, he contacted an individual with ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

In 2019, Khalife received an initial payment of £1,500 for his services, delivered in a dog waste bag in a London park. Weeks later, Khalife emailed the British foreign intelligence service MI6, claiming to have received money from the Iranian government for sending false information.

He offered to be a ‘double agent’ for MI6, but the intelligence service did not respond, even after a second attempt.
