Henny Eman, the former Aruban politician, has died at the age of 76. Eman became Aruba’s first Prime Minister in 1986 after it separated from the Netherlands Antilles.
He led three cabinets: the first from January 1986 to February 1989, and two more between July 1994 and October 2001. Eman was the leader of the Christian Democratic Aruban People’s Party (AVP), founded in 1946 by his grandfather of the same name.
His father also led the AVP for a period, and Eman followed in their footsteps by becoming party leader in 1977. Henny’s brother Mike is the current AVP leader.
As Prime Minister, Eman advocated for the development of Aruba’s tourism sector. In 1990, he was appointed a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
