Floods and Landslides in Indonesia Claim 21 Lives

On the Indonesian island of Java, the death toll from floods and landslides has risen to 21. Rescue workers have retrieved bodies from the debris, including that of a five-month-old baby.

Heavy rain has caused rivers to overflow. Thirteen people were injured, and 300 are in temporary shelters.

Rescue workers continue searching for missing individuals in the mud. Nine villages in Central Java province are the hardest hit, with dozens of buildings and a dam destroyed.

Several bridges connecting mountain villages have also been damaged. The tourist island of Bali has also been affected by the adverse weather, with a landslide on Monday resulting in four deaths and one missing person.

It is the rainy season in Indonesia, lasting from October to March, which frequently leads to floods and landslides. Authorities had previously warned that the persistent downpours could trigger more natural disasters.
