Five more arrests in deadly Turkey hotel fire investigation

Five additional individuals have been detained in the criminal investigation into the deadly fire at the Turkish ski resort Kartalkaya. Their charges remain undisclosed.

Previously, the hotel owner and three others were arrested. The hotel fire, which occurred yesterday, resulted in 76 fatalities and numerous injuries.

Interior Minister Yerlikaya confirmed that the bodies of 45 victims have been returned to their families, while DNA is being used to identify the remaining 31. Turkey is observing a national day of mourning today.

During a press conference, President Erdogan promised accountability for those responsible for the disaster. The fire started in the early hours on the fourth floor of the eleven-story Grand Kartal hotel, largely made of wood, which housed 238 guests, according to the Interior Minister.

The fire’s cause is still unknown, but reports suggest inadequate fire safety measures. Several survivors noted that fire alarms failed to activate, forcing them to navigate smoky corridors in complete darkness.

At least two individuals died after jumping from the building in panic.
