Fifteen-year-old lioness Lalana euthanized at Rotterdam Zoo

Rotterdam Zoo, also known as Diergaarde Blijdorp, has euthanized its fifteen-year-old lioness, Lalana, due to the FeLV virus, commonly known as feline leukemia. Her condition deteriorated rapidly due to her age.

Lalana was one of only two Asiatic lions in the zoo, alongside the lion Wishu. Lalana became severely ill last Friday, exhibiting symptoms such as loss of appetite, vomiting, minimal movement, and incontinence.

The decision to euthanize her was made in consultation with veterinarians. The virus was detected in November during a fertility examination.

Although the virus is not uncommon, it affects many feline species globally, including domestic cats. It remains uncertain whether Wishu is also infected.

His blood samples are being tested, and further analysis might be required. If Wishu remains symptom-free, a new mate will be sought for him.

The zoo intended for the pair to produce offspring, but Lalana’s fertility difficulties prompted last year’s examination. The Asiatic lion is endangered, and Diergaarde Blijdorp plays a crucial role in conserving the species by coordinating breeding efforts globally.

There are approximately 700 Asiatic lions worldwide, primarily in India’s Gir Forest National Park, which has been under protection since the early 20th century to prevent extinction.
