The majority of former Blokker employees have not applied for unemployment benefits through the UWV. Of the approximately 3,500 employees, only about 240 have made a claim.
According to the UWV, this suggests many have found new employment. While this number may slightly increase, the expectation is that it won’t rise significantly.
Nearly 400 Blokker-owned stores closed early this year following the company’s bankruptcy declaration on November 13. However, 46 franchise stores remain open.
The UWV indicates there are ample job opportunities for ex-Blokker staff, both within and outside retail, given their transferable skills such as sales and customer service. Lists of promising roles include positions in other stores, customer service, warehouses, hospitality, and healthcare.
Labor market adviser Frank Eskes mentions the current tight labor market offers prospects in various sectors. Post-bankruptcy, the UWV temporarily covered wages for up to six weeks, a period that has now ended for Blokker employees.
A potential business restart is being considered by Roland Palmer, associated with the Blokker family, who aims to collaborate with franchisees and take over the web store. The reopening of closed stores depends on negotiations with landlords, some of whom have leased the spaces to other retailers.
