A student and a teacher were fatally stabbed at a high school in northern Slovakia, with another student critically injured. An 18-year-old suspect was apprehended shortly after the incident.
Local emergency services report that the deceased were 51 and 18 years old, while the injured student is also 18. All victims are female, and the suspect is also a student at the school.
The motive remains unclear. The attack occurred in Spisska Stara Ves, a town near the Polish border with about 2,000 residents.
Violent incidents at schools are rare in Slovakia, with the last deadly event occurring in 2020, when a former student attacked a school in Vrutky, resulting in one death and five injuries. In 2022, a student attacked another at a school in Novaky, injuring the latter.
Slovak President Pellegrini described the latest incident as “a true tragedy,” stating, “No problem in the world can be solved with a knife or any other weapon.” According to Slovak newspaper Korzár, the stabbing suspect was known as an exceptionally good student, with social media often celebrating his achievements in national and international school competitions.
